Arrangement & Organization of the Collections

The stacks are open to all library users. Material may be used in the stacks or brought to tables in the reading rooms. Help is requested in keeping material in order; instead of reshelving, materials should be left on stack tables or desks. The collection is arranged on eleven stack levels as follows:

Bound journals are shelved on stack levels 1-3 and 5-7, starting with W1 A on stack level 7.

Unbound journals are shelved in the Journal Reading Room.

Books are shelved on stack levels 8, 10, and 11. Oversize books marked with one or two asterisks before the call number are shelved at the south end of each stack level.

Reserve materials (marked with the designation All Year Reserve, Permanent Reserve, or Class Reserve) may be requested at the Circulation Desk.

Audiovisual materials (marked with the designation LRD, Videotape, Film, Audiotape, Slides, or AV kit) may be requested at the Circulation Desk.

History Division materials (marked with the designation Hist. Div.) are shelved on stack level 9 or in the History Division Reading Room.

Rare or restricted materials (marked with the designation Rare, Restr., or [ ]) are available for paging by the History Division staff.

Southern Regional Library Facility (SRLF) materials (marked with the designation SRLF) are shelved in a storage facility near the northwest end of the UCLA campus. Self-paging via ORION is available to all users with valid library cards.

Reference materials are shelved on stack level 4 or in the Reference Reading Room with the exception of History Division reference materials and audiovisual reference materials, which are shelved in the History Division Reading Room and in the Learning Resources Division, respectively.

Pamphlets are shelved in file cabinets along the west wall of stack level 4.

Microfiche and microfilm are shelved in cabinets at the north end of the Reference Reading Room.
