Find Articles Using America: History and Life & Historical Abstracts

AHL lists journal articles on U.S. & Canadian history published 1964-present. HA lists journal articles on world history, 1450 to the present (excluding the U.S. & Canada), published 1954-present. UCLA students, staff and faculty can use these databases in UCLA libraries, computer labs, dorms and departments as well as find out how to access them remotely through Bruin OnLine's Services page (http://www.bol.ucla.edu/services/).

1. GO TO THE UCLA LIBRARY HOMEPAGE & SELECT A DATABASE
(http://www.library.ucla.edu)

Click on Article Databases located on the navigation bar to the left.
Under the Popular Titles list, click on America: History and Life or Historical Abstracts.

2. ENTER SEARCH WORDS

Click on Advanced Search towards the bottom of the page.
Type your search word(s) in the top Keyword box.

Click on the vertical SEARCH button to submit your search.
To see an abstract (summary) of an article & subjects, click on DISPLAY FULL ENTRY.

Search under a subject to find more items on the topic—e.g., Anarchism and Anarchists.

3. GET THE ARTICLE

Click on
If the first option says: "Full text available from..." then the article is available online and you can click on the link to get it.
If the first option says: "See if your campus has this. Select the Full Record on MELVYL" then the article is not available online. If this is the case, you will need to locate the journal article in print. To do this you should:
- Write down the complete citation: author, title of article, journal title, volume, pages & date.
- Go to ORION2 (http://orion2.library.ucla.edu), type the journal title in the search box—e.g,. journal of american culture and click Search Journal Title.
- Click on the number of titles link to the right of the journal title—e.g.,
- If there is more than one title, you can click on Expanded Results toward the top of the screen to view more than one record at the same time.
- Scroll down to view the library location, call number & volumes owned by the library.
- Some libraries allow journals to be checked out. To view the status for a particular volume, click on the linked summary information under Volume.

4. SAVE ARTICLE DATABASE RECORDS BY PRINTING or EMAILING

Click in the box to the left of Tagged to mark items you have selected.

Click on OUTPUT OPTIONS in the left column.

To print

Click the vertical SUBMIT button & then click the browser’s print button.

To email

Under Output Type, select E-mail, then type your email address & click the vertical SUBMIT button.
