3. Yahoo

General Web subject directory with its own search engine. Use the linear directory approach by selecting one of 14 broad categories, and then a succession of narrower topics. Or, type keywords in the search box at the top of the screen for a list of categories which match the search words. Users submit URLs for inclusion. Users can set up their own profiles by clicking on "My Yahoo."

4. AltaVista

Sophisticated search engine, providing both simple & advanced searching of Web sites as well as Usenet newsgroup messages. Offers a variety of languages for searching--e.g., Hungarian. Users can customize searches by setting preferences. Much help is available, including excellent graphic suggestions for limiting searches.

5. Google

Very fast & sophisticated search engine which is more likely than most to give you relevant results. It searches both for matches to all the words you enter and for matches to which other pages link. It also keeps a cached copy of pages, so you can see a page as of the time it was indexed, even if it is temporarily unavailable.

6. Northern Light

Search engine that lists both material on the Web and in “Special Collections.” Users can view the Web material and read a summary of the "Special Collections" material for free. There is a fee for the complete text of "Special Collections" items.
